Going Beyond Talent: How Belief Lifts Talent Through The Lens of Tim Tebow

At The John Maxwell Company, we want to inspire leaders to go beyond their talent. Talent is just the starting point for successful impact in any organization. Over the next few weeks, we will highlight various factors that hone a leader’s talent.

In his book, Beyond Talent, John Maxwell writes “Belief in your mission will empower you. Having confidence in what you are doing gives you the power to achieve it… Belief in your mission will encourage you… Belief in your mission will enlarge you.”

Tim Tebow is a great example of belief lifting talent. His faith serves as his foundation to succeed, and ultimately, motivation to better himself as a leader, a team player and an individual.

As a Heisman Trophy winning quarterback while in college and now on the pro stage, Tim has shown how belief propels leaders forward in their careers, roles and vision for their lives.

From the start of his time at the University of Florida, Tim did not let anything get in the way of his desire to become one of the best football players in the country, demonstrated in his being the first sophomore in NCAA history to receive the Heisman Trophy.

As he has moved on to professional football, Tim has stated: “I don’t know what my future holds,” adding that he would love to play football for as long as he can, “but I do know who holds my future. And in that I know that I have peace and comfort.” Tim shared with the world that his belief in God has allowed him to fully pursue his passion while lifting up those around him.

“You will become on the outside what you believe on the inside.”  – Beyond Talent, John C. Maxwell

Football may be a passion, but it’s not a career for most of us. As leaders, we have the opportunity to use our gifting to bring opportunities and growth to others. Outside of football, Tim created The Tim Tebow Foundation to use his public platform (much like your current position) to inspire and make a difference in the lives of others. Belief in action lifts everyone around you.

The Tim Tebow Foundation has four initiatives. One of which is the W15H Program, which partners with Jacksonville’s “Dreams Come True” Foundation, to fulfill the dreams of children with life-threatening illnesses who wish to meet Tim. Another initiative is The Tebow CURE Hospital, currently in progress through partnership with CURE International. This 5-story, 30-bed orthopedic hospital in Davao City, Philippines will offer physical and spiritual healing to children in need. The Tim Tebow Foundation and Tim himself serve as great role models for leadership – doing more through partnership with others than apart.
